An interactive map of the people, places, and ideas that quietly shaped America’s path to flight and space.
Many are familiar with Philadelphia’s role during America’s birth, but did you know that the Greater Philadelphia Region can also take pride in having a deep heritage in aerospace innovation?
Along the Delaware River, in factories, on runways, in academic institutions and organizations and manufacturing businesses originating in the greater Philadelphia area, engineers, pilots, machinists, and researchers helped to conceive, build and test the aircraft, spacecraft, machinery and devices that helped make modern aviation and spaceflight possible.
The Philly Aerospace Trail is an interactive map revealing these places where aerospace innovation contributed to American aviation and spaceflight excellence– and continues today!
Explore the map to uncover what still stands, what has been repurposed, and what has disappeared — yet continues to shape air and space travel today.

While serving as Ambassador to France for the fledgling United States during the Revolutionary War and its immediate aftermath, Philadelphia's own Benjamin Franklin followed news about the first balloon flights with interest and witnessed multiple ascensions. He provided detailed descriptions of these events to colleagues abroad. He wrote that balloons "may pave the Way to some Discoveries in Natural Philosophy of which at present we have no Conception."
Franklin's words were prophetic; the Greater Philadelphia Region holds a rich and storied heritage in aerospace innovation and technology, contributing significantly to the advancement of aviation and space exploration.

We especially acknowledge the incredible efforts of Paul Freeman, who maintains Abandoned & Little-Known Airfields, which we have cited for former airfields included on our map.
Please consider making a donation to Paul's website for preserving important history associated with early to mid-20th century aviation in the United States.
